Emily’s May Post

Thanks again to Bill Ridgely and everyone that helped him run the Spirit of Free Beer competition.  We all got to enjoy the left overs at the April meeting at Dan Rozman’s.  The quality of the beers has definitely improved.  Pam Leifer arranged for great prizes.  All in all it was a successful competition and a very enjoyable meeting with beautiful weather to go with it.  Start thinking about what you want to brew for next year.

Howard decided to retire in April.  WE made a quick trip to Minneapolis to visit friends and celebrate.  Our friends planned a bike wobble using “Nice Ride” bikes.  On Friday we sampled beers at New Bohemia which had interesting and different wursts and many beers on tap.

Then we visited Insight Brewery and enjoyed several brews outside. Next we visited the Norseman distillery. They make gin, vodka, rum and leather aquavit. On Saturday, we rode to 6-12 Brewery, Bauhaus, Able Seed House, and Indeed .  Then we went across the river to the Snack Shack had lobster rolls and “Dearly Departed” purple cocktails for dinner.  Sunday it was raining, so we sampled beers at their house for lunch before flying home.  What a great way for How to start retirement.  (Some of us still have to work).

May’s meeting is coming quickly.  We will have our annual Chili Cook Off on May 15th. Note it is being held on Sunday this year.  Please join in the competition to cook the best chili or serve the best beer to go with chili.  There will be more information in the newsletter about this.

There are always opportunities to learn more about brewing.  The Ministers of Enlightenment always provide us with excellent topics at the meetings.  Most brewers are glad to have extra hands when they are brewing, so ask someone if you want to get some good tips on improving your own techniques.  Sharing information and gaining new skills is one of the great advantages of being a member of our club.  Make good use of your resources!

So pull out those chili recipes and get ready for a great chili cook off.  If you aren’t cooking chili, bring a side dish or dessert that will complement the day.  I look forward to seeing everyone there.

Tschüß,

Emily
