Emily’s Post for October

Well, we are into the middle of October.  It is hard to believe the year is flying by so quickly.

I hope everyone enjoyed Oktoberfest.   The food was delicious and the beers were outstanding as always.  Thanks to Bill Ridgely for reserving the pavilion at the park and running the St. Pauli Girl Run, Steve Marler for the decorations, music and fest beer identification contest, Pam Leifer for the food contests, Mark Hogenmiller for the rolls, and Howard Michelsen for cooking the bratwurst. There should be some photos of the event on the website.  Make sure to join us next year.

I have been reading various articles about the benefits of beer.  A study was conducted on mice which showed a flavonoid found in hops and beer could help to reduce weight and levels of LDL cholesterol.  The flavonoid studied was xanthohumol.  The mice were fed high fat diets but high doses of the flavonoid reduced inflammation and LDL cholesterol levels.  It also reduced insulin levels.   In another study xanthohumol was shown to be a strong antioxidant which helped protect brain cells from diseases like Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s diseases. A good reason to enjoy hoppy beers!!

November will bring us Real Ales.  I hope you all have started making your real ales for the festival. It will be November 12th and directions are on the web site.

October will be a busy month for the club.  October 15th is the BURP monthly meeting at Joe Federico’s house.  The contest will be featuring meads and ciders.  There is more information elsewhere on the site and directions have been posted.

October 29th the club will be brewing the 35th Anniversary beer –  a strong saison.  Please sign up if you would like to join us.  We will start at 10 am at Jim Busch’s home brewery.  Directions are on the website.

There are lots of ways to get more involved in the club, and the club is only as good as your involvement.  Please contact me or talk to any of the officers about how to get involved and take an active role. I want this to be your club. It needs your input and involvement. Help setup a bike wobble, brewpub tour, festival.  We are always open for new ideas.  I look forward to hearing from you!!

See you next week!!
