Em’s February Post

We had an excellent start to the year with our meeting in January.  Robert Stevens arranged for the use of the hall at the Wheaten American Legion. We were joined by BadAss (Brewers and Drinkers Around Silver Spring).  Here’s a sample of some of the events that occurred during the meeting:

  1. Mike Reinitz presented the new BJCP 2015 classification and how if differs from 2009
  2. Rich Suchoski from BadAss led a discussion on descriptors to use when discussing beers.
  3. We had an Imperial Anything completion with good participation.
  4. Colleen White celebrated her birthday with cake for everyone!

We had the great snow storm in January and several BURPers took advantage of the time and brewed.  What a great way to use the time.  I hope you enjoyed your time off doing something interesting and enjoyable.

The February 6th BURP meeting will be a joint meeting including several Northern Virginia and Metro-DC homebrew clubs. The venue for the meeting will be Rock Bottom in Ballston, VA. at 2 p.m.  Because this meeting will be held in a commercial establishment, the rules are somewhat different than our regular BURP meetings.  First, we are NOT ALLOWED to bring in any outside food NOR commercial beer. Yes, this violates one of the prime directives for BURP meetings (bringing food) but we need to respect our hosts.  Homebrewed beer will, of course, be welcome in any form: keg, growler or bottle; just not commercial brews. Everyone at the meeting will need to have a name tag with the Club name listed on it – so remember those name tags!  This is the third time we are meeting here with the Northern Virginia and DC area homebrew clubs.  I am looking forward to a great meeting and lots of fellowship with the other clubs at the Ballston Rock Bottom restaurant.  This month’s competition will be blond or amber hybrids.    So bring out your best, and see how your beer stacks up!

Looking forward to March, please remember the Dan McCoubrey Annual Stout Competition will be featured at our March 19th meeting. It will be our first competition using the 2015 guidelines.  The meeting will be at Pat and Janet’s  Community Clubhouse.  More info on that later.  BTW, Howard and I just kegged an Irish Stout yesterday… looking forward to tasting yours!

Spirit of Free Beer is taking place in April again and registration deadline is April 2nd.  We are looking for stewards, judges and general helpers.  There is always much to do, so volunteer and get involved – it’s fun! And a great way to learn more about the different beer styles, as well as another opportunity to socialize with your BURP friends.  Judging will take place April 9th and 10th.

We are still looking for volunteers to work on a bus trip to Philadelphia.  Contact me if you ae interested in helping to organize the trip.

Jeanie Osburn and her committee are working hard on the bar and set-up for BURP for AHA club night during the AHA National Convention in Baltimore, June 9-11.  Registration is now open, so plan to attend!  You will have fun and gain new ideas and useful information.

See you at Rock Bottom!
