The 31st Annual BURP Chili Cook-off
By Bob & Kathleen Warriner Chili Commissioners
The 31st annual BURP Chili Cook-Off was held on Sunday May 15th at the home of Dan Allers and Christina Wren (their fifteenth year hosting) in Fairfax, Va. This is one of BURP’S longest running events! Speaking of Chili, it was chilly and the wind really blew but it didn’t dampen the spirit and appetite of a very large crowd as they enjoyed chili produced by eleven hopeful Chili Cook-Off teams vying for first place honors.
Most of the Chili Cook-Off Teams were in place by 10 am and ballots were handed out by 2 pm for tasting and judging. All ballots were collected at 4 pm and the following winners declared.
First place went to entrant #11 Tim Artz with his Smokin’ Bowl O’ Red (his second year in a row placing 1st). Check out Tim’s award winning recipe here: http://www.tims-food-obsession.com/2016/05/competition-chili-2016.html. Second place went to entrant #8 with team members Tom & Colleen Cannon, Pat & Janet Crowe & Rich Sampson, (their second year in a row placing 2nd) with their Jackalope Chili. Third place went to entrant #2 with team members Dona & Woody Lee, Beth & Bill Madden, Anthony Nigro, Danger & Sparky Korabik (virtual) with their Bambi Chili. The Hottest Chili went to entrant #8 Tom & Colleen Cannon, Pat & Janet Crowe & Rich Sampson for their Jackalope Chili.
The Hard Times Cafe’s Fred Parker generously provided prizes for all winners. This is their 30th year as sponsors for this event.
